AFGANA Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi described on Sunday the improvement of ties with Pakistan as a “very positive development in bilateral relations,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Afghan in a statement.
Earlier this week, both nations agreed to update their diplomatic relations exchanging sent, a key step to normalize ties after years of tense relations between Islamabad and the Taliban administration in Kabul.
Pakistan on Friday announced his elevation of diplomatic representation in Afghanistan since the position of matters at the level of ambassador, as bilateral ties “move in a positive trajectory.”
According to the statement, Muttaqi spoke with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ishaq overload and discussed the update of diplomatic relations.
“Muttaqi described him as a positive step and expressed the hope that the remaining stages will be completed soon,” said the statement. “Both parties expressed that updating the level of diplomatic relations would pave the way to expand cooperation in many areas.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FO) said that Muttaqi welcomed Pakistan’s decision to improve his diplomatic relations with the ambassador level and reported that Afghanistan has decided to do the same.
“Both leaders also reviewed the implementation of the decisions taken during the visit of DPM/FM to Kabul on April 19, 2025 and promised to continue working together to establish mutual confidence between the two fraternal nations,” said the FO in a statement.
He added that both nations agreed to “work closely” to quickly finish a frame agreement for the Railway project of Uzbekistan-Affanistan-Pakistan (UAP) for regional connectivity.
Experts believe that the conversation between Dar and Muttaqi indicates that the two parties remain focused on increasing convergence and cooperation in their bilateral interactions.

China has played a key role in the normalization of relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Both nations made the ads days after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, declared in a statement “to strengthen diplomatic exchanges and contacts at the end of last month.

The ties of Pakistan-Fanganistan have been fogged by a deep distrust, cross-border attacks and acute disagreements about the presence of the prohibited militants of Tehreek-I-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) that operate from the Afghan territory.
Islamabad has long accused Kabul to house TTP fighters, who were blamed for a 70 percent increase in attacks within Pakistan in 2024.
Russia accepts Ambassador nominated for Afghas in Moscow
Separately, Russia officially accepted the nomination of Afghanistan of an ambassador to Moscow, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Sunday, as economic and political ties grow between the two sanctioned nations.
Russia in April suspended its prohibition of the Taliban, which he had designated for more than two decades as a terrorist organization, in a movement that paved the way for Moscow to normalize the ties with the leadership of Afghanistan.
“We hope that this new phase allows both countries to expand cooperation in several fields,” Muttaqi said in a statement.
Diplomats say that the formally presentation of ambassador’s credentials to a foreign head of state indicates a step towards recognition.
