The president of the United States, Donald Trump, told journalists on Friday night that he wanted to assure Chinese students in the country that they would be fine amid the repression of their administration against the Academy.
The Trump administration said this week that it would be intended specifically to permits for Chinese students, in its last side against higher education in the United States. But when asked on Friday which message would send to Chinese university students in the country, Trump insisted: “They will be fine. It will work well.
“We just want to see the individual students we have. And that is true with all universities,” he told reporters.
The softest tone occurs after a judge extended a temporary block on Trump’s bet on Thursday to prevent Harvard from registering international students.
The Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, promised on Wednesday to revoke the visas “aggressively” to the students of China. Rubio has already revoked thousands of visas, largely on the participation of students in the critical activism of Israel’s offensive in Gaza, but also for small traffic violations and other infractions.
The Trump administration has been in a continuous confrontation with the Academy, and Harvard in particular, demanding that it provide a list of students that the government is interested, something that the prestigious university has decreased to do.
“I don’t know why Harvard is not giving us the list. There is something because Harvard is not giving us a list,” Trump said Friday.
“They should give us a list and get out of trouble,” he insisted, suggesting that “they don’t want to give the list because they have names there that are supposedly quite bad.”
In the graduation ceremonies this week, the president of the University of Harvard, Alan Garber, received a feet ovation of a minute when he asked the universities to remain “firm” in the war that the Trump administration has fought against students and schools.
“We want people who can love our country and care for our country and appreciate our country,” Trump said Friday.
International students on average represent just under six percent of the university population of the United States, well below Britain, the second main destination for international students, where the figure is 25 percent.
