An employee of the Environmental Protection Department of the City of the Environment has been identified as the victim of the explosion of the sewer ship on Saturday morning at the Hudson River in New York City.
Chief Diesel Engineer Marine Raymond Feige, 59, died in the explosion at the North River’s wastewater resources recovery center in West Harlem, said the DEP in a statement on Monday. The incident occurred around 10:30 am on Saturday in a boat that transported raw wastewater that was attached.
“Ray was a respected engineer and a stable and dear colleague who will be deeply surprised,” said the Commissioner of De Rohit T. Aggarwala. “For more than three decades, he worked in DEP in a job that most New Yorkers do not see themselves largely, but it is essential to keep the city in operation, and we are grateful for their service.”
The DEP said FEIGE began in the agency in 1991 in the Marina Section, where he remained during the rest of his career with a love for working in the water and union with the ships.
He “brought a deep technical experience and unwavering dedication” to wastewater operations in the city, the agency said.
The Diesel engineer was declared dead at the scene after being found unconscious in the river. Another DEP employee was taken to the hospital, and a third in the scene rejected medical treatment.
The DEP said the explosion was caused by an accident in the boat, which is still under investigation. The agency said it seems that there has been no impact on the operations of the plant or the environment.
