Harvard University sued the Trump administration on Friday for its decision to revoke the ability of the Ivy League to register foreign students, increasing the White House efforts to adjust the practices in the academy to the policies of President Donald Trump.
In a complaint filed in the Federal Court of Boston, Harvard described the revocation as a “flagrant violation” of the Constitution of the United States and other federal laws and had an “immediate and devastating effect” in the university and more than 7,000 visa holders.
“With the blow of a pen, the government has tried to erase a quarter of the Harvard student body, international students who contribute significantly to the university and its mission,” said Harvard.
“Without his international students, Harvard is not Harvard,” added the 389 -year -old school.
Harvard asked a federal judge to block the revocation, citing “the immediate and irreparable damage inflicted by this action without law.” The case was assigned to the American district judge Allison Burroughs.
White House spokesman, Abigail Jackson, dismissed the demand.
“If Harvard worried so much to end the scourge of anti -American, anti -Semitic and proterrorist agitators on their campus, they would not be in this situation to start,” Jackson said.
“Harvard should spend his time and resources in the creation of a safe campus environment instead of presenting frivolous demands,” he added.
The termination of the Certification of the Student and Exchange Visitors Program of Harvard, in force in force with the 2025-2026 academic year, was announced by the Secretary of National Security, Kristi Noem.
She said the termination was justified due to “Harvard’s development violence, anti -Semitism and coordination with the Chinese Communist Party.”
Harvard defends the “negative to surrender”
In a letter to the Harvard community, the president of the school, Alan Garber, condemned the actions of the administration.
“The revocation continues a series of government actions to retaliate against Harvard for our refusal to deliver our academic independence and submit to the illegal statement of control of the federal government about our curriculum, our faculty and our student body,” Garber wrote.
Harvard enrolled almost 6,800 international students in their current school year, equal to 27 percent of the total registration.
In his complaint, Harvard said the revocation would force him to retract admissions to thousands of people and have launched “innumerable” academic programs, clinics, courses and research laboratories in disorder, only a few days before graduation.
The revocation follows Noem’s demand on April 16 for a great Harvard information treasure about student visas holders.
In a letter to Harvard, which was attached to the complaint, Noem said the information was necessary because the university had “created a hostile learning environment for Jewish students due to the lack of condemning Harvard’s anti -Semitism.”
On Thursday, Noem said Harvard could restore his certification between 72 hours a series of records on international students, including the video or audio of his protest activity in the last five years.
In his letter on Friday, Garber said Harvard responded to the requests of the Department of National Security as required by law.
