Use of newspapers having Quranic verses banned for packaging in Punjab – Pakistan

LAHORE: The Punjab Government prohibited the use of newspapers with newspaper verses for packaging.

The Department of Origin issued a letter on the imposition of an immediate prohibition of the use of approximate documents or newspapers that contain verses of the Sacred Koran to package or preserve the basic products.

The order, promulgated under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898, aims to prevent potential disturbances for public peace and tranquility.

The Directive, signed by the Minister of the Interior, cites concerns about the misuse of religious texts in daily commercial practices, which could offend religious feelings. The ban will remain in force for 90 days throughout the province, as of May 12.

He addressed the authorities to guarantee the generalized dissemination of the order through official channels, including the Gazette, the newspapers and the means of transmission.
