The Pakistan Electoral Commission (ECP) has announced the elections for the general Punjab vacancy in the Senate on May 29.
The seat was vacant after the disappearance of Senator Professor Sajid Mir on May 3, 2025, Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
According to a notification of the provincial electoral commissioner, the nomination documents can be presented on May 14 and 15 for the elections that will be held at the Punjab Assembly. The names of the nominated candidates will be published on May 16.
The scrutiny of the nomination documents will be held on May 17, while the appeals against their acceptance or rejection will be presented on May 20. Appeals will be eliminated on May 22.
The revised candidate list will be published on May 23, while the candidacy can be withdrawn before May 24. The survey will take place in the cameras of the Punjab assembly between 9 am at 4 pm
Nomination documents can be received from the Punjab ECP office on 10-Court Street in Lahore during office hours.
The remarkable religious and political leader, Senator Professor Sajid Mir, died at the age of 86 years after a heart attack. Mir, Jamiat Ahle Hadith Pakistan’s head, belonged to a Punjab Sialkot suburban area.
Mir was chosen as PML-N senator in 2021, which was his fifth time playing the Senate elections in the party ticket. He had also served as senator from March 2009 to March 2015.
On May 6, Syed Waqar Mehdi of PPP won the partial elections held for the vacancy general seat of the Sindh province in Karachi.
The ruler PPP and the opposition MQM-P had nominated Waqar Mehdi and Nighat Mirza, respectively. The PTI did not present any candidate and announced boycott the survey process as well.
In the partial election held at the Sindh Assembly, Mehdi obtained 111 votes, while the Nighat Mirza of MQM-P received 36, and two were rejected, said the officer who returns, the commissioner of provincial elections Sindh ejaz ejaz Anwar Chauhan. A total of 149 votes were issued during the scheduled voting time.
The headquarters of the General Senate was vacant after the death of the PPP senator, Taj Haider, on April 8 in Karachi. He was chosen a senator in a PPP ticket of a general seat of the Senate in Sindh in March 2021 for a period of six years.
