A man and his son were among the three killed when a Dumper truck crashed with his vehicle on Sunday night in the main bypass of the North in Karachi.
In recent months, Karachi witnessed an increase in traffic accidents, especially involving heavy vehicles, including shower and water tankers, who killed almost 500 people and injured 4,879 in 2024, according to hospital data.
Arrejani Town Station Official (SHO) Mohammed Ali Shah said Dawn.com That three people were traveling in a car when a “speed” hit them in the northern bypass near the University of Hamdard.
“The police hurried to the scene after receiving information from the accident. The police found the crushed car under the Dumper while the three occupants were found dead in the place,” he added.
He continued that the driver managed to escape the scene before the police arrived there.
“However, the suspect Gul Baig was subsequently arrested.”
The deceased were identified as Suleman, 60, his son Usama, 35, and Faraz Sikander, 40. The bodies were transferred to the Abbasi Shaheed hospital for legal formalities.
In recent months, Karachi has witnessed generalized protests by residents, political parties and civil rights activists on the alarming increase in fatal incidents involving heavy vehicles mainly Dumper trucks.
The provincial government has made efforts to control the threat of accidents in Karachi, including the prohibition of the diurnal movement of heavy vehicles and impose fines on reckless driving.
On April 18, the city administration extended the complete prohibition imposed on heavy vehicles in the city during the day for another two months.
The prohibition of heavy vehicle movement was initially imposed for two months on February 14 following traffic accidents. By allowing heavy vehicles to operate in the city from 10 pm to 6 am, the city administration authorized the district and the Traffic Police to register cases against the prohibition offenders.
Karachi commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi said vehicles that transport essential products such as water, cooking oil, medicine, oxygen cylinders for medical facilities, meat and other items were exempt from prohibition.
3 killed by family dispute
According to a police officer, three people were shot dead while two other wounds when the relatives fought against them on the National Highway.
“A dispute broke out between relatives about a personal enmity in Razzaqabad during which firearms were used, which resulted in the death of three people and injuries to two others,” said the city of Shah Latif a Amen Khoso. Dawn.com.
The three people shots in the incident were identified as Usman Munsif, 20, Touqeer Siddiq, 25, and Touseef Bashir, 30. The injured include Noman Bashir, 20 and Munsif Latif, 45.
The police surgeon, Dr. Sumaiya Syed said that two people with bullet wounds were brought dead at the Jinnah postgraduate medical center (JPMC), while the third succumbed during treatment.
The Sho said the police arrested a suspect from the scene and a gun was recovered from their possession. “The police are further investigating the triple murder and efforts are being made to stop the remaining suspects,” he added.
