NEW DELHI: Women voters now outnumber their male counterparts in 13 states and one Union Territory, according to the final electoral rolls released so far with January 1, 2025 as the reference date. This is an improvement over last year when the update comes to January 1, 2024, as the reference date had shown a higher number of women voters than men in a dozen states and Union Territories.
Across the country, the total number of women voters as per the newly updated electoral roll remains 2.33 crore less than the male electorate. Of the over 99 crore Indian electorate, nearly 50.7 crore are men and 48.3 crore (48.8%) are women. Electors of the third gender number 48,870, with states like Tamil Nadu accounting for the highest number (9,161), followed by Maharashtra (6,145), UP (6,089) and Karnataka (5,095).
New additions this year to the list of states/UTs where the absolute number of women voters exceeds the male electorate are Assam, Karnataka and Nagaland. However, the trend appears to have reversed in Chandigarh, where male voters have again outnumbered women this year in terms of absolute numbers.
The data for Chandigarh and Nagaland is provisional as their final electoral roll has a deadline of January 1, 2025 which has just been released or will be released in the coming days.
Among the 13 states and UTs where the female electorate has surpassed the male electorate in absolute numbers as per electoral rolls released this year are Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland. , Puducherry and Telangana. According to the national electoral roll released early last year, the states with women voters in the lead were Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
