An earthquake of 5.3 magnitude hit several cities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday, according to a statement from the Pakistan Meteorology Department (PMD).
The PMD said the earthquake reached a depth of 230 kilometers, with its epicenter located in the Hindukush region.
“No victims or damage have been reported,” said the provincial disasters of KP (PDMA), Anwar Shahzad Dawn.com.
Parts of KP – Mardan, Swat, Swabi and Abbottabad, and their surrounding areas – felt the tremors of that earthquake, he added.
Last month, an earthquake of 4.4 magnitude shook the adjacent areas and areas with a depth of 185 kilometers and epicenter in Hindukush.
On April 12, an earthquake of 5.5 magnitude hit Islamabad and Rawalpindi, while the tremors also felt in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from another previous earthquake.
Pakistan witnessed around 20 earthquakes of low intensity in the first half of February, an average of more than one tremor every day.
However, experts had pointed out that such minor seismic activities “are ahead of the high intensity earthquakes by constantly releasing accumulated energy within tectonic plates.
Pakistan falls to three important tectonic plates, Arabic, Euro-Asian and Indian, according to the geological engineer Muhammad Rean, creating five seismic areas within the country.
