Georgia deputy shot dead, another injured in traffic stop

Evans, ga.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s office confirmed the deputy’s death around 6:30 pm and said the other deputy was taken to a hospital, WRDW-TV reported.

The suspect was identified as James Blake Montgomery, who believed he was in a caravan near Milla 194 in Belair Road, near Augusta County agents, Columbia, they told WRDW.

The helicopters and drones were in the air as part of the effort to capture Montgomery, the deputies said.

Communication on police radio told officers to take a photo of the suspect “in the trailer.” The approach was the Arrowood Mobile Houses Community.

Governor Brian Kemp issued a statement about X about the shooting.

“Marty, the girls and I are praying for the loved ones and colleagues of the Sheriffs of Columbia Deputy County who has fallen into the fulfillment of duty, as well as his fellow agent of the law injured tonight while protecting his co -workers,” Kemp said. “As they remain in our hearts and prayers, we also painfully remember why those who use a badge have gained more than our last respect and appreciation.”
