Carney calls Pope Francis a voice of ‘moral clarity’
I am Cat Tunney, a senior reporter from the CBC parliamentary office. Liberal leader Mark Carney is in PEI for an announcement related to health care, but first addressed the death of Pope Francis, calling him “the consciousness of the world.”
“Pope Francis was a voice of moral clarity, spiritual courage and unlimited compassion,” said Carney, a Catholic.
The former central banker reported a parable Francis shared in 2014, which is also cited in the Body of Carney Values.
“Humanity compared with wine, rich, diverse, full of spirit, and the market with grappa, distilled, intense and sometimes disconnected, and asked all to reintegrate human values in our economic lives,” said Carney.
“He reminded us that markets have no values, people do it, and it is our responsibility to close the gap, turn that pinch into wine.”
The prime minister called Francis to Canada in 2022 and his decision to issue an apology in residential schools “a crucial step to advance in his trip to significant reconciliation.”
