A large fire broke out in a factory within the export processing zone located in the extension of the Landhi industrial area of Karachi on Thursday, police officers and rescue services said.
Talking with Dawn.comRescue spokesman 1122, Hassaan Khan, said the fire exploded in the Sungraver factory and spread rapidly, which caused the best efforts of firefighters to put out the fire.
He said it was a plastic manufacturing industrial unit, he added that five fire tenders along with two water bounts and an ambulance were busy trying to control it.
It was avoided that the fire spread even more, but the thick smoke of the flames was still emerging until night.
Khan said that the exact cause of the fire was not known, but it was suspected that a short circuit could have begun.
He added that no one was present at the factory at the time of the fire and that is why no injuries were reported.
However, he said that the raw material present within the factory was completely destroyed.
“As there are combustible materials such as cardboard, thread rolls and plastic [inside the factory]It will take more time to control the fire, ”he explained.
Meanwhile, Malir’s police superintendent Kashif Abbasi, together with the attached commissioner Salemullah Ode, visited the scene and ordered the factory management to improve safety measures even more, according to a police statement.
Abbasi said that fire offers had controlled him and that there were no casualties.
Fire incidents are common in the metropolis due to the absence of adequate fire safety measures in buildings.
Thirty stores were destroyed when a great fire broke out in a commercial building in Clifton in February.
Four people, including a firefighter, were affected by smoke inhalation and 12 fire tenders worked for four hours to control the fire.
Last year, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) informed the Sindh Superior Court that he had made a fire security audit of more than 265 commercial buildings, and that he did not have a single fire safety certificate or a non -objection certificate (NOC) issued by the Fire Brigade Department.
Of 265 buildings, around 155 did not have fire and smoke detectors installed, while the state of nine of these buildings was not available in this regard, the KMC report added.
Similarly, the condition of the wiring and electric system of more than 155 buildings was called dissatisfactory. Regarding access to fire extinction equipment, the report said that around 200 buildings did not have non -unsatisfactory fire extinguishing equipment.
The SHC had ordered the provincial authorities to ensure that the relevant teams inspect all shopping centers in the city to determine security standards in place.

The court had approved such directives in a case related to a fire in a shopping center in Rashid Minhas Road in 2023. At least 11 people died while five others were injured after a fire broke out inside the RJ shopping center due to an alleged short circuit.
