The Mexican-Canadian voter worried about ‘the future for our children’
Hello from Kingsville and Leamington, two cities in the southwest of Ontario, where I am reporting live today in CBC News Network. These communities are centers for greenhouse vegetable producers, and I will have more to inform about that later today.
Leamington has a large Mexican community, partly due to agricultural workers who came to work here and stayed. We are going to Tacos Tony and we met the owner Maria Hernández, who emigrated to Canada more than 30 years ago.
While serving tasty tacos and other authentic Mexican dishes last night to Mexican and Canadian clients, Maria shared what she has in mind during these elections.
“The future for our children. We want all the best for them,” said Hernández, who has four grandchildren. She said a clean atmosphere is also important for her, and it was one of the reasons why she moved to Leamington from Toronto.
In the commercial war with the United States, Hernández said Trump is taking care of his country, and Canada has to do the same. She has decided as a voter, but maintained her private choice.
When I asked two different clients what they want to prioritize Canada’s leaders, both said affordable homes.
“What happened to the family home of two or three bedrooms for a few hundred thousand dollars, instead of the monster houses of $ 800,000?” Hillary Leipold said. “Yes, make houses, but make them available to everyone, not just a demography all the time.”
