Canada freezes rebate payments to Tesla, bars it from future programs due to tariffs

Canada has frozen all reimbursement payments for Tesla and has prohibited the manufacturer of electric vehicles for future EV refund programs, Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland said Tuesday.

No refund payments will be made until each claim is investigated individually and determines that it is valid, Freeland said in a statement sent by email shared by his office.

Freeland also ordered Transport Canada to review the eligibility requirements for future incentives for zero emission vehicles (IZEV) to ensure that Tesla vehicles are not eligible provided that the “illegitimate and illegal tariffs of the United States are imposed against Canada.”

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for Reuters comments.

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has imposed a large number of tariffs, with most of them in early April, in the form of 25 percent taxes to most of Canada’s assets.

Trump said Monday that car rates will arrive soon, although not all his threatened taxes would apply on April 2 as indicated above.

Canada has frozen $ 43 million in reimbursement payments for Tesla. The order to stop payments occurred before liberal leader Mark Carney announced that a general election would take place on April 28, according to Toronto star, which reported the news previously.

The star reported earlier this month that Tesla presented an extraordinary number of EV refund claims in the last days of the program in January, with a single Tesla dealership in the city of Quebec claiming almost $ 20 million in public subsidies by documenting more than 4,000 sales of electric vehicles for a single weekend.

Ontario stopped providing financial incentives for teslas bought as taxis or travel actions due to commercial tensions with the US. UU. Earlier this month.

The Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, a nearby ally of Trump, has led the effort of the White House to reduce the federal government and the budget as head of the Government’s efficiency department.
