The mayor of Edmonton, Amarjet Sohi, will apply for the Liberal Party of Canada in the federal elections, which was called Sunday.
Sohi, who was expected to be executed but had not confirmed before this weekend, will take an unpaid absence permit of his municipal duties during the campaign, according to a press release issued on Sunday by Justin Draper, spokesman for the mayor’s office.
If Sohi is chosen as MP, he will have to resign as mayor, according to the statement. If you lose, you will return to the role and serve to this year’s civic elections, in which you would not seek re -election.

Sohi previously served as Liberal Deputy for Edmonton Mill Woods from 2015 to 2019. This constituency has been divided into two new horseback riding: Edmonton Southeast and Edmonton Gateway.
A city spokesman told CBC News earlier this week that a City Council member can run for a federal or provincial office, without having to take an absence permit.
The press release that Draper issued on Sunday confirmed that Sohi would move away, and said that his official duties will be delegated to the mayor attached in the meantime.
The city of Edmonton has scheduled rotations during which the councilors serve as an attached and interim mayor. Ward Tastawiyiniwak Coun. Karen Principe is currently the Vicelosa, but Ward O-Day’min Coun. Anne Stevenson will be Vic and Vicealcalde when the election occurs.
The mayor position cannot remain vacant, according to the press release. So, if Sohi is chosen as MP, the City Council will have to decide how to proceed.
