Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is back in Ottawa today, but with no sign yet that he is ready to address growing calls for his resignation, the Liberal group’s regional chairs have called a meeting today to discuss next steps.
Sources confirm to CTV News that the party’s regional group chairs will meet virtually today at 3 p.m. EST.
During the call, national group chair Brenda Shanahan is expected to be asked to consider calling a meeting of all Liberal MPs. Some want a more formal push for his resignation to be presented to the prime minister, or at least a timetable set for deciding whether he intends to remain as party leader.
This meeting comes after calls from caucus members across the country for Trudeau to resign grew over the holidays. The Liberals are also contemplating party leadership rules and the types of preparations needed for a potentially accelerated race.
Trudeau, after a week out west with his family, is not expected to be part of this meeting. However, he is expected to virtually chair a Canada-U.S. cabinet committee meeting this afternoon, according to sources.
The meeting of ministers charged with managing relations with the incoming Donald Trump administration is expected to include some discussion of the meeting of Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly at Mar-a -Lake last week.
