India-Canada tensions
The visit of the Canadian spy chief Rogers occurs during tense bilateral relations between his country and New Delhi on the case of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistan sympathizer.
The bilateral ties deteriorated after the accusations of the then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in September 2023 about the possible Indian participation in the murder in the Canadian territory of Nijjar, a citizen of that country and a terrorist designated in India, in June of that year.
New Delhi dismissed Trudeau’s accusations as “absurd.” Relationships worsened when Ottawa, in October 2024, linked Indian diplomats, including High Commissioner Sanjay Verma, with the murder of Nijjar.
India responded by remembering Verma and five other diplomats, and expelled six Canadian diplomats, including the position of Stewart Wheeler affairs.
