Mahmoud Khalil and seven current students sued the University of Columbia on Thursday in an attempt to prevent the school from producing disciplinary records to a Chamber Committee, since school officials said they were sanctioning the students involved in pro-pixture manifestations last spring.
Khalil, a green card holder and Palestinian activist who played an important role in the students’ protests against the Israel-Ahamas war in Gaza, was arrested during the weekend while federal officials seek to deport it.
The lawsuit, presented in the Southern District of New York, alleges that the application of the Registries Committee violates the first amendment and that the fulfillment of the University with the Committee constitutes a violation of contact.
Columbia officials declined to comment on the pending litigation.
Just when the demand was filed, the University announced “suspensions of several years, temporary revocations and expulsions” for those who participated in the occupation of Hamilton Hall on the New York city campus of the school.
The developments occur when dozens of protesters who requested Khalil’s liberation were arrested while organizing a sitting in the Trump tower in New York City.
Last week, the Trump administration said it would cancel almost $ 400 million in federal subsidies to the university “due to the continuous inaction of the school against persistent harassment of Jewish students.”
Shortly after, Columbia promised to commit to Trump’s officials in the hope of restoring lost federal funds.
“We are reviewing the announcement of federal agencies and the understanding of working with the federal government to restore the federal financing of Columbia. We take the legal obligations of Columbia seriously and understand how serious this announcement is and we are committed to fighting anti -Semitism and guaranteeing the safety and well -being of our students, teachers and staff, “said a University spokesman last week.
