Washington – President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he feels “very bad” for the thousands of officials who have lost their work in recent weeks, but that “many of them do not work at all.”
Asked by NBC News if Trump feels responsible for so many people who lose their jobs, he said: “Surely I feel very bad … but many of them do not work at all. Many of them never appeared to work.”
“When we cut, we want to cut, but we want to cut the people who are not working or … not doing a good job,” he told reporters during an Oval office meeting with Ireland Prime Minister Micheál Martin. “We keep the best people.”
Trump made reference to the drastic reduction of employees that the Administration is doing to the Education Department this week. “[Education Secretary] Linda McMahon is a real professional … of very sophisticated business, and cut a large number, but kept the best people and see how everything works. But our country was very bad. I mean, whether it was signed or the contracts what was so bad, so obviously bad. “
The president said that billions of dollars are being removed from “fat, waste and fraud and abuse” of the federal government.
“We have a dream. And you know what the dream is? We are going to move to the Department of Education, we are going to transfer education to the United States, so that states, instead of bureaucrats who work in Washington, so that states can administer education,” Trump said.
The reaction has grown in recent weeks on the scale of the cuts, headed by the Efficient Department of the Government of Elon Musk. Musk, the richest man in the world and Trump’s greatest campaign donor, said at the beginning of this week that Dege is working in “practically” in all federal departments and plans to double their size.
The shots have impacted workers throughout the federal government, both in Washington, DC and throughout the country.
In addition to the workforce of the Department of Education, all employees of the Department of Health and Human Services were offered voluntary purchases last week and other more recent employment cuts or cancellation of government contracts in the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Last week, the White House advisor, Alina Haba, made negative comments about federal employees, saying that “I really don’t feel sorry for them,” said Haba. “They should return to work for the American people, such as President Trump and this administration.” During those same comments, he said that military veterans affected by the dismissals led by DEGE may not be “suitable for having a job at this time.”
