Decision on Manmohan memorial soon as top central officials scout sites | India News


NEW DELHI: Senior officials of ministry of housing and urban affairsincluding secretary K Srinivas, visited different sites in Rashtriya Smriti Sthal and adjoining Vijay Ghat for the funeral of late Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday afternoon. A decision on the location of the monument will be made soon.
Previous teams of other staff had visited the sites and carried out assessments, which included areas adjoining Kisan Ghat, Rashtriya Smriti Sthal and the Sanjay Gandhi memorial.
There have been rounds of meetings between officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Urban Affairs. The allocation of land for the monument is carried out by the Land and Development Office of the Ministry of Urban Affairs.
Sources said the government will seek consent from Singh’s family before allocating the land to a trust, which will build the memorial.
TOI has learned that some officials met family members of the late chief minister before taking a final decision.
As per the rule, once the land is allocated, the trust will get the land for a token amount. The Central Directorate of Public Works carries out the development at the expense of the trust.
The government has already expressed its willingness to erect a monument in memory of the former prime minister’s family.
