A senior Iranian official said Thursday that Tehran was willing to take on the case of Nimisha PriyaKerala nurse sentenced to death in Yemen for murder of Yemeni citizen. “We are willing to do everything we can as this is a humanitarian issue,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Iran-backed Houthi rebels continue to control large swaths of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa.
After Yemen’s president last month confirmed the death sentence of Nimisha, imprisoned since 2017, India said it was in touch with her relatives and providing them with all possible help to explore legal options.
Iran’s help offer came ahead of another round of foreign ministry consultations with India in which Tehran is expected to call for the revival of trade ties, including the resumption of oil supplies to India. Unlike Iran, India has not only continued to import crude oil from Russia despite international sanctions, but has also increased Russian supplies.
The official also spoke about bilateral ties with India and the need to explore opportunities to improve trade ties, despite the sanctions Iran faces. “We do not want to impose any difficulties on India, but there are opportunities that can be explored. The nature of sanctions against Iran and Russia is different, but it remains a legitimate question why India has continued to import energy from Russia but not from Iran. “We need to see how this problem can be addressed,” the official said.
Speaking about the conflict in Gaza and the general situation in West Asia, the official said that Israel’s military actions in Gaza had only served to further “internationalize” the Palestinian issue. “The central issue is the occupation of Palestine and it must be addressed. We want to see an independent Palestinian state. No one can erase it from the global agenda,” said the official, who also supported stronger counterterrorism cooperation with India in the context of recent events in Syria.
