Police investigate death of inmate at NY prison as 11 staff placed on administrative leave

A police investigation is being carried out after an inmate died on Saturday in a prison in the state of New York where 11 administrative license employees have already been put, authorities said.

The 22 -year -old Messiah, died at the Wynn hospital in Utica, said the New York corrections department in a statement on Monday night. No details related to the circumstances of his death were published.

Nantwi was arrested in the correctional installation of the average state north of Utica, where I was waiting for the trial for allegedly shooting and killing two people in two separate incidents within 30 hours in 2023.

I was already serving a five -year sentence for the second degree possession of a criminal weapon related to a 2021 shooting.

Nantwi’s death occurs two weeks after six prison officers were accused of the death of Robert Brooks, who was beaten by the guards in December in the correctional center of Marcy, just a few hundred meters away, in an attack that Governor Kathy Hochul described as “brutal” and “sick”.

“Upon learning of the death of an 22 -year -old Messiah Nantwi, he imprisoned an individual at the State’s correction center on Saturday, March 1, the New York Attorney’s Office was notified and the New York State Police,” said the Department of Corrections in a statement on Monday.

The statement added that it depends on the county forensic doctor to determine the cause of Nantwi’s death and whether to make public the result of his investigation.

The New York State Police said in a statement that he was investigating “the circumstance surrounding his death” with the Community Correction and Supervision Department (DOCCS).

Stan German, executive director of the New York County defenders, said that although Nantwi was accused of serious crimes, he had a violent education and faced “important mental health challenges.”

“It is true that he was imprisoned, but he still had the right like all of us, to basic human dignity and security,” German said in a statement to Associated Press. “Instead, he suffered a non -meaning violent death at the hands of state corrections officers operating within a toxic culture that our society ignores mainly.”

The director of the Union of Civil Liberties of New York, Donna Lieberman, said in a statement that this was not an isolated incident.

“We are extremely disturbed by the informed murder of another imprisoned person in Marcy at the hands of the correction officers and demand full transparency and justice,” he said.

“No one should die in custody at the hands of correction officers, who are accused of the safety of people at Doccs facilities.”

Nantwi’s death occurs when the current strike action continues to affect operations in New York prisons, despite an agreement reached between Governor Hochul and the prison union.

The corrections department declined to comment on the case of Associated Press.
