I would like it to be easier for Indian nurses and other health professionals to get to Australia. That is an area in which we have a deficit and you have something like that.
The way we think about it is that we have global rules that allow people to migrate based on skills. Indians tend, more than others, to fulfill those criteria.
Australian universities in India and mutual recognition of degrees
Two foreign universities have opened a branch in India and both are Australians: Wollongong and Deakin. Both are more than completely signed. A more Australian university, Western Sydney University, has announced that it will open a campus here in Noida. I am very sure that we will announce more Australian universities to open campus in India in a short time.
In recognition of titles, that is a university province to the university. And it would not be normal for a university to recognize a whole list of degrees of another university. What is really good is what is called articulation, when someone usually one or two years ago here in India and then transfers and one or two years ago in Australia and gets a title from both universities together. And I think that’s where the future lies.
Bilateral ties
I came here with a mandate of our PM to drive [our relationship] As far and fast as we could. And we have had good progress for a year and a little that I have been here. From our perspective, there are three fundamental drivers behind this bilateral relationship: the first is strategic alignment. We see India as indispensable to frame a balance in our region that is sustainable.
The second is our economic complementarity. India is the most rapidly growing economy in the world. Confidently, we predict that it will be the third largest economy by 2030. [That’s] of particular interest to us … because we are neighbors [and also] A highly complementary economy. Naturally, we produce the type of things that India will need for the next generation of its growth. Energy is obvious. Minerals, especially critical minerals, and skills and training.
You will have seen how successful we have been to attract students from all over the world. And Indians particularly. Now, more than 1,30,000 Indians are studying in Australia.
The third driver of our relationship is what we describe as a human bridge. The fact that there are now a million people of Indian origin living in Australia. We only have 26 million on the continent. It is the fastest growing ethnic group in Australia. Indian languages are the fastest growing language group in Australia.
Scope of a complete trade pact
The first phase of our commercial agreement is working very well and that has given us a greater reason to want to conclude a second phase. Part of that would be to strengthen the supply chain in important supplies such as critical minerals … and encourage our investors and to have a greater interest in the countries of the other. One part of that would be for us to provide a greater degree of cooperation with the Indian agricultural sector.
Anti-Indian extremists in Australia
Australia is a democracy and we take the right of peaceful protest very seriously. And the people living in our country have the right to take their points of view to the public domain provided that, as long as, that does not imply violence or any form of intimidation of other communities. What I am more closely involved is the protection of Indian diplomatic and consular agents and their facilities … and I am sure that our agencies are doing a very good job.
Adani Australia coal project
The coal project is fine for us. It is producing coal that is being sent to India. My deals with the group have largely been in the field of renewable energies. We want people to be interested in our renewable sector. We have a goal that 82% of our grid is green only by 2030. That is greater than approximately 35% at the beginning of this government. Investors around the world consider that Australia is an opportunity.
Trump’s treatment to allies
I see no evidence that the United States turns in. Prime Minister Modi was the fourth important leader and there are many others who have arrived in the United States in a few weeks since President Trump was inaugurated. It was evident that President Trump was going to bring a different type of character to his national and international treatment. And so it is.
Future of Quad
Our approach is in the quad that continues to indicate that these four democracies [Australia, India, Japan, US] They are prepared to spend a substantial effort to maintain an order in our region that is free, open and prosperous and resistant. The areas where we will be so active or more active in the future will include consciousness of maritime domain, critical technology and, particularly, submarine cables, and in fields such as responding to humanitarian disasters and other disasters in the region.
