MUMBAI: Bombay traffic police penalized 17,800 motorists and collected Rs 89.19 lakh as fine for violation of traffic rules during the new year celebrations in the city, an official said Wednesday. Police conducted the search from New Year’s Eve until early Wednesday morning.
Action has been taken against people driving drunk, obstructing free flow of traffic, riding motorcycles without helmets, jumping signals and entering one-way roads, the traffic police officer said.
Motorists were also fined for speed violations, driving four-wheelers without wearing seat belts and using mobile phones while driving, he said.
The traffic police collected Rs 89,19,750 as fines through e-challan from traffic rule violators, the official said.
A large number of people gathered at prominent locations in Mumbai including Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Bandra Bandstand and Juhu Chowpatty to celebrate the New Year.
Security has been beefed up at key places in the city to avoid any untoward incident, the official said.
