On Thursday, Mexico threatened to sue Google for changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf de América” so that Google Maps users in the United States comply with the executive order of President Donald Trump.
“We have a dispute with Google at this time,” President Claudia Sheinbaum said at her morning press conference. “And if necessary, we will file a civil demand.”
Trump signed executive orders that renamed the Gulf of Mexico and returned the name of the highest in North America, Denali, back to Mount McKinley shortly after its inauguration on January 20.
Sheinbaum has blatant to call the United States “Mexican America”, pointing out a map before the United States, a third of their country in 1848 were seized.
Google said that the users of their MAPS platform outside the United States would continue to see the original and new name for the Gulf of Mexico, as is the case of other dispute locations.
“People who wear maps in the United States will see ‘Gulf of America’, and people in Mexico will see ‘Gulf de México’. Everyone will see both names, ”said the technological giant in a blog post.
The changes in the name of Trump also caused criticism of the indigenous groups in Alaska, who have advised for a long time to keep the name of Denali. Apple has also changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” so that US users of their mapping application comply with the Trump order.
