NEW DELHI: Nutty Village, a startup based in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao, will introduce two new peanut butter flavors in honor of former US president Jimmy Carter, who died on Sunday.
Company founder Aman Kumar, 29, said the new flavors are a tribute to Carter’s support of agriculture and rural development. Carter, who had a connection to India through his mother’s work there according to the Carter Center, is considered a “champion of peanut farming.”
“As a tribute to the former president of the United States of America, considered a champion of peanut farming and rural development, we will dedicate our next range of coffee flavored peanut butter and barbecue flavored peanut butter in his honor,” he stated. he told PTI.
The coffee and barbecue flavors will join the company’s existing dark chocolate, brown sugar and sugar-free options.
The company collaborates with approximately 50 farmers and sources peanuts from 5 to 6 suppliers for the production of peanut butter. They involve women self-help groups in processing, creating local employment opportunities, said Kumar, who has a Master’s degree in Social Entrepreneurship from TISS. The company, co-founded with Sushant Berma in 2020, aims to help small-scale peanut farmers get better prices by eliminating middlemen.
Unnao district is home to approximately 10,000 groundnut farmers, of which 2,000 practice organic farming.
Manish Singh, a farmer from Unnao, said: “We first met Aman when he wanted to discuss how we could all work together for better profits. He brought us seeds and we worked to find the best farming methods.”
Meanwhile, Chandkali, a member of a self-help group, said, “Engaging in secondary groundnut processing earns him good money.”
Jimmy Carter became the third American president to pay an official visit to India. Following a recommendation by the then Indian Prime Minister Morarji Desai, a village in Gurugram district called Daulatabad Nasirpur was renamed Carterpuri.
