The Peca amendments were approved by both Chambers of Parliament and signed by President Asif Ali Zardari despite the opposition of journalists and civil rights groups.
According to an official press release from the Prime Minister’s office, the two leaders discussed the political situation of the country, with Prime Minister Shehbaz extending good wishes to Mauna Fazl.
Last week, the Chief of Jui-F supported journalists’ concerns about the sin amendments, deplorating that President Zarari allegedly breached the commitments assumed regarding the law.
Maulana argued that the contribution and consent of journalists should have been considered before the legislation was approved.
Maulana Fazl said he had spoken with President Zardari on the phone to ask him to take the journalist community to trust the law.
He said that the president had assured him that he would talk to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, on his return from the United States.
However, the president later signed the law and did not honor the commitment, which was highly deplorable since this should not have happened at that level, added the JUI-F leader.
He suggested that the contribution of the journalist community should have been considered on the law, which had a broad and direct impact on the media. He said that reservations regarding the misuse of the bill were justified in the light of the history of such events.
