Nuuk, Greenland-the Parliament of Greenland approved a bill on Tuesday that prohibits political parties and rich on the Arctic Island rich in minerals that belongs to Denmark.
The bill aims to protect the “political integrity of Greenland” and will immediately enter into force, according to a translation of a parliamentary document in the Danish that describes the measure.
The bill “should be seen in the light of geopolitical interests in Greenland and the current situation in which representatives of a great allied power have expressed interest in taking over and controlling Greenland,” said the document.
Before assuming the position for his second term on January 20, Trump said he would not rule out the use of military force to confiscate Greenland control, calling him vital for the national security of the United States. His eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., visited Greenland last month and told citizens: “We will treat you well.”
Denmark is an American ally for a long time and founding member of NATO, and its semi -autonomous territory is home to a large military base of the United States.
With a total area of 836,000 square miles, Greenland, population of approximately 57,000, is more than a fifth of the size of the United States, according to the CIA World Factbook.
A superior legal officer in the Parliament of Greenland, Kent Fridberg, told Associated Press that he did not know if any foreign donor had contributed to the political parties of Greenland and that the idea of the bill was “basically a preventive measure.”
Fridberg said that some Russian politicians had expressed a similar interest, and that political parties in Greenland are generally funded by public means.
The new measure also prohibits any part from receiving national private contributions that exceed 200,000 Danish Kroner (approximately $ 27,700) in total, or 20,000 Kroner (approximately $ 2,770) of a single taxpayer.
