A mass fire in a factory in the Karachi export processing zone (KEPZ) near Landhi that injured eight people and damaged at least three other factories was controlled on Thursday after hours of rescue efforts, authorities said.
Fire incidents are common in the metropolis due to the absence of adequate fire safety measures in buildings.
Rescue spokesman 1122, Hassaanul Haseb Khan Dawn.com: “A total of 20 fire tenders with two snorkeling, five ambulances and water baby were involved in the fire that was controlled at 4 pm.”
The rescue official explained that they received information about the incident at 10 am, after which the agitated efforts remained underway until the fire was put at night. However, cooling work continued.
“Some repair/construction work were also underway in the factory, whose structure apparently seemed to be weak,” said Haseb. He added that eight factory workers who eliminated the goods, despite the warnings of the firefighters not to do so, were injured as part of the collapsed building.
“They did not pay any attention to such warnings, probably [because] They were under strict instructions of the factory management to eliminate her assets and change the same to a safer place, ”explained rescue official 1122.
According to the rescue spokesman, the factory staff told firefighters that some welding work were ongoing in the basement of the five -story building, which caused the fire. A greater investigation into the incident was underway.
Haseb said: “It was a vast area and the direction of the wind was heavy, which caused a rapid propagation of fire, and as a result, three adjacent factories also caught fire.”
While the structure of these three factories was intact, they suffered damage. However, the first building from which the fire originated was completely destroyed.
Rescue spokesman 1122 estimated that there were 1,200 workers who worked in these factories and were safely evacuated.
Haseb said that some fire tenders were initially sent, but when they realized the seriousness of the problem, more fire tenders from the Fire Brigade of the Metropolitan Corporation of Karachi and Rescue 1122 were called.
“The injured were taken to a nearby hospital through the Embulance of Edhi,” said Rescue 1122 in a statement today.
Early in the day, Sindh’s prime minister Murad Ali Shah realized the fire and ordered officials to take immediate measures to save people priority.
He directed all the fire brigades and the rescue agencies to take immediate measures, while the Karachi commissioner, Syed Hassan Naqvi, had an exhaustive investigation into the cause.
The Prime Minister assured the owners and workers of factories affected by the complete assistance incident.
CM Shah was informed that many employees were present within the factory when the fire exploded, but rescue teams successfully evacuated all staff safely.
