Port Sudan: The Paramilitary Fast Support Forces of Sudan (RSF) killed 75 people in a drone strike in a mosque on Friday while presiding their assault on the city of Darfur of El-Fafasher.
El-Fafasher is the last important city in the vast Western region that is still under regular army control and the RSF has siege it since last year.
The unmanned aircraft strike hit the faithful in the neighborhood of Al Alja of the city, where the residents fleeing from the HIT displaced camp of the city Abu Shouk had sought refuge since the progress of RSF.
“The bodies were recovered from the debris of the mosque,” said a rescue agency one of the hundreds of volunteer groups that coordinate relief throughout Sudan.
The RSF has been locked in a devastating war with the regular army since April 2023.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was worried that there have been murders with ethnic motivation of the type that has increasingly accompanied the fight with a “devastating impact on the civilian population.”
Al Residents de Al Daraja checked the remains to find and bury the dead, but said they had run out of deaths for the bodies. “We had to use plastic bags,” said a resident, using a satellite internet connection to avoid communications blackout.
“There are no more death in the city after all this siege and death,” he said.
The siege of the RSF has caused massive hunger in the city, where families have survived in animals for months.
The key base falls to RSF
The satellite images published by the Humanitarian Research Laboratory of the University of Yale showed on Thursday the RSF forces that advanced on multiple fronts, even around Abu Shouk Camp and the old peace maintenance base of the Non -African Union.
Since then, the base has been used by the joint forces, an alliance of armed groups that has fought with the military since the late 2023 against RSF fighters.
The alliance has been key to the city’s defenses. The largest ethnic group in the city, the Zaghawa, sees the RSF as an existential threat.
