An earthquake of the magnitude of 6.1 hit Sindirgi in western Turkiye on Sunday, said the Turkish Disaster Management Agency (AFAD).
The earthquake was felt in several cities in the west of the country, including Istanbul and Izmir’s tourist access point, officials said, they have not yet commented on possible damage or deaths.
Several buildings collapsed in the province of Balikesir after the earthquake, according to images transmitted by the Turkish media.
The earthquake arrived at 7:53 pm (9:53 PM PKT), with a replica of 4.6 magnitude after several minutes later, according to AFAD.
The earthquake was also registered by the United States Geological Service (USGS), which registered the earthquake and replica at a depth of 10 kilometers.
“All AFAD teams and relevant institutions have immediately begun searches on the land. No undesirable event has been marked so far,” said Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, in X.
Türkiye is cross -linked by several geological failures, which have previously caused catastrophes in the country.
An earthquake in February 2023 in the southwest killed at least 53,000 people and devastated Antakya, the site of the old city of Antioch.
More recently, a tremor of 5.8 in the same region resulted in a death and injured 69 people in early July.
