United Steelworkers Union says that workers from five Starbucks locations in Ontario have ratified their first collective agreements.
The union says that the contracts led by the Union are a significant milestone in the impulse of collective bargaining in the coffee giant.
The locations include stores in Ajax, Kitchener-Waterloo and Toronto.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
Unión Unite in Starbucks in Canada has had a road full of potholes, including the company that closes its only unionized store in Vancouver in 2023.
The United Steelworkers 2009 filed a complaint about that movement, as well as for the company’s threats against an employee for its unionization activity in a store in Langley, BC.
In February, the BC Labor Relations Board discovered that the company had legitimate reasons to close Vancouver’s location, but discovered that Starbucks unfairly made “threats of adverse consequences” against the employee who supports the union.
In the United States, an impulse of Starbucks Workers United unionization has grown since its first successful trip in Buffalo, NY, in 2021 until now on behalf of about 570 stores and 11,000 workers.
