On Friday, police detained 24 PTI leaders and workers following a protest at the Karachi Press Club (KPC), held to demonstrate the party’s concerns over the well-being of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Reports about Imran’s poor health had swirled on social and foreign media a day ago, prompting government and PTI leaders to dismiss the rumors and claim that the former prime minister, currently imprisoned in Rawalpindi’s Adial Jail, was fine.
Several PTI workers, including women, carried banners with slogans in favor of the former prime minister as they headed towards the KPC today. The workers and party leaders chanted slogans and made speeches.
Authorities had sealed off all routes leading to the Kosovo Protection Corps by setting up roadblocks and parking vehicles.
A significant police presence was observed in the Kosovo Protection Corps and surrounding areas, supported by female personnel.
PTI Sindh spokesperson Mohammed Ali Bozdar said 20 PTI workers and leaders were detained; However, South Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Syed Asad Raza later said Sunrise The number was 24.
Among those detained was the party’s provincial president, Haleem Adil Shaikh.
Bozdar said that representatives of the Insaf party’s lawyers’ forum arrived at the Preedy police station and held talks with the officials. Subsequently, all those arrested were released.
Southern Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mahzoor Ali also confirmed that all the protesters were released.
He said police took action when the crowd was “accused” and the force feared they might commit vandalism and create a law and order situation.
“Therefore, the police simply evicted them, but they were not arrested,” the SSP said.
