The North Carolina Police is investigating the murder of a 23 -year -old Ukrainian woman aboard a train system of the Charlotte area last month.
The victim, who was identified by the police as Iryna Zarutska, had recently come to the United States from Ukraine to escape the war with Russia, according to a Gofundme initiated by her family. His death has generated national attention and outrage of President Donald Trump.
The officers of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to Camden Road’s block after a call that reports an assault with a mortal weapon on August 22, according to a police press statement. Zarutska had been stabbed on the Lynx Blue Line train near the Light Right, WCNC reported.
The officers discovered that the 23 -year -old had suffered knife wounds, and was declared dead on the scene, police said.
Decar them Brown Jr., 34, was identified as a suspect in stabbing, police said. He was taken to a local hospital “with injuries that do not threaten the life suffered at the time of the incident” and will be arrested and accused of first degree murder after his release.
The surveillance video obtained by WBTV shows someone who seems to be Zarutska uploading to a complete train and sitting in front of a person who seems to be brown. After a few minutes, the person reported that Brown apparently draws a pocket knife, rises and supposedly stabs the individual sitting in front of him. There was no interaction between the two people before the alleged stabbing.
In a statement, the mayor of Charlotte VI Lyles described the incident “a meaningless and tragic loss.”
“My prayers remain with their loved ones while continuing to cry at an unimaginable moment. Like many of you, I am disconsolate, and I have been thinking a lot about how security is really seen in our city,” Lyles said. “I am still committed to doing everything possible to protect our residents and ensure that Charlotte is a place where everyone feels safe.”
Zarutska had recently left Ukraine “seeking war security and waiting for a new beginning,” according to Gofundme, looking for support for his aunt and uncle with funeral expenses.
Trump mentioned the stabbing on Monday while pronouncing comments during the second hearing of the Religious Freedom Commission in Washington, DC, saying: “There are evil people, and we have to face that.”
“A lunatic has just got up and began: it is right on the tape, no, not very observable, because it is very horrible,” he said. “But only brutally stabbed. She is just sitting there. Then, there are evil people. We have to be able to handle that. If we don’t handle that, we don’t have a country.”
His death has also caused repritions from others to the right, who have accused the media of not covering the incident deliberately.
The White House Cabinet Deputy Director Stephen Miller blamed the Democratic Party for the incident.
“The Democratic Party at all levels (judges, politicians, academics, non -profit organizations) is organized around the defense and protection of the criminal, the monstrous and the depraved ones,” he wrote in a position on X. “The more vile the threat is, the more vociferous the Democratic Party works to protect and allow it.”
Elon Musk, who previously played an unofficial advice in the Trump administration, commented on the incident in several publications in X.
“Let’s change the law,” Musk wrote in One X post. “From time to time, name and shame to the DAS and the judges that allow murder, violation and robbery. But especially shame who financed the campaigns of the DAS and the judges. That will make the biggest difference.”
