2 more Trudeau cabinet ministers won’t seek re-election


The Minister of Justice, Arif Virani, and the Minister of International Trade, Mary NG, will not be executed in the next federal elections, announced in separate statements on Monday.

They are the fifth and sixth ministers in the Justin Trudeau cabinet to announce that they do not run for re -election since the prime minister considered his cabinet in December. That number is seven if you include Trudeau himself.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to have served as a member of the Parliament for Parkdale-High Park for three consecutive elections,” said Virani, deputy of Toronto, in a statement. He said he made the decision “with a heavy heart, and after a considerable soul looking for recent weeks.

Virani was first elected in 2015. Before being appointed Minister of Justice in 2023, he served as a parliamentary secretary for several portfolios, including immigration, heritage, justice and international trade.

NG became a deputy when she won a 2017 election in the driving of Markham-Thornhill in the Toronto area. She was appointed minister of small businesses in 2018 and took over the International Trade portfolio the following year.

“My first priority has been the safeguarding of our access to the world’s largest economic association through Cusma, our free trade agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico,” he said in his statement. “Now more than ever, while we sail through winds against the US tariffs. Uu., Canada must draw its course for the future.”

Virani said he will remain as a minister whenever he has the privilege of serving, and as MP until the next elections.

In his statement, he also discussed the impact of his political career on his wife and two children, who have only known a family life with her husband and father in politics and often out of the city.

“People say that is the price of public service,” he said. “But it is difficult to appreciate the toll that has the price unless I live it, personally in my case, for more than a decade.”

Virani and NG join the Minister of Transportation and Internal Trade Anita Anand, Rural Development Minister Gudie Hutchings, Emergency Preparation Minister Harjit Sajjan and former Minister of Tourism, Soraya Martínez Ferrada, as members of the federal cabinet that does not They seek re -election.

Ferrada resigned from the cabinet last week to run for the mayor of Montreal. The others remain in their publications.
