Islamabad: In the midst of heavy monsoon rains, the National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) issued on Monday an alert for heavy rains and a flood situation in several parts of the country in the next two days, while 19 people lost their lives in Baluchistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi due to the extreme climate.
A moderate to heavy monzón rain is expected until July 10, particularly in the collection areas of all the main rivers, which will probably cause sudden floods in several regions of Pakistan, according to the NEOC. The alert also led the prime minister to order the National Authority for Disaster Management (NDMA) and other authorities to remain on maximum alert to treat possible emergency situations, particularly flooding.
In Baluchistan, at least seven people died and many others were injured as a result of the fresh monzón spell in the last 48 hours, said the Provincial Authority of Disaster Management (PDMA). Almost 22 districts of Baluchistan have been affected by the rain, and PDMA has already emitted an alert on strong rains and sudden floods. The PDMA confirmed seven deaths. He said 22 houses were damaged while five houses were destroyed.
The areas that were severely affected by the Monzón spell included Awaran, Jhal Magsi, Khuzdar, Musakhail, Qila Saifullah, Barkhan, Kohlu, Lorealai and parts of the districts of Zhob and Sherani. “At least 22 districts of the north, south and center of Baluchistan were affected while the monsoon spell continues in these districts,” PDMA officials said.
“The Washuk district that limits Iran was severely affected, where permanent crops were washed and many houses were damaged, which caused a large number of people not to have homes,” the authorities confirmed and added that the rain also damaged the solar panels in Lorealai and Surab.
At least six people, including three children drowned in rain -related incidents in different parts of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, police and emergency services reported.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, six people lost their lives in the districts of Malakand, Buner, Manshera and Karak.
Prime Minister Shehbaz ordered the National Disaster Management Authority, rescue agencies and administrative authorities to remain on the maximum alert to deal with any potential emergency.
He also expressed concern that the operation of the spills of the Tarbela dam can increase floods in the lower districts along the Indo River.
Potential Flood Floods
According to the Neoc forecast, an increase in water flows in all the main rivers, including Kabul, Indus, Jhelum and Chenab, are expected. Currently, low flood levels are observed in Tarbela, Kalabagh and Chashma on the Indo River, while the low flood mark is also expected to reach. It is likely that the Chenab River experiences low levels of flooding in the stations of Marala and Khanki. The Kabul River in Nowshera is expected to increase at low flood levels, while the Swat and Panjkora rivers, along with their associated streams and nullahs, can swell due to the rain in their collection areas. River jhelum is expected to, along with its tributaries, experience high tickets, resulting in localized sudden floods. It is projected that tickets in Mangla Dam on the Jhelum River will reach the low flood limit.
The torrents of the hill in the districts of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur can become more active, generating flows from medium to high.
In Baluchistan, the Nullahs and the seasonal currents in the districts of the Northeast, including Jhal Magsi, Kachi, Sibi, Qila Saifullah, Zhob and Musakhail can also experience high flows.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, the Hunza and Shigar rivers can see a greater water discharge.
