Jind: The district administration successfully prevented a child marriage in Jind City on Saturday, which is the fourth such intervention in the last one-and-a-half month period in Jind District only.
On January 25, the administration obtained a tip-off that a child marriage was being solemnized in Shyam Nagar area of Jind City. Acting on this information, District Child Marriage Prohibition Officer Sunita sent his team accompanied by police and NGO representatives to the spot to intervene in the matter.
Upon reaching the scene, the officials searched the documents to establish the age of the bride, which revealed her age to be only 14 years and 6 months, while the groom’s age was 31 years. The groom’s marriage procession had reached the city from Buwana village of this district.
Officials warned both parties of strict legal action under the provisions of the Child Marriage Act, 2006, if they tried to move further in this regard. After this strict warning, the marriage procession returned home without completing the marriage ceremonies.
Surender Singh Maan, state coordinator of the NGO team, said that with the help of the district administration, they successfully intervened in four child marriages in just a period of one and a half months in Jind district. While joining the counseling session at the women’s police station, the girls’ mother, a widow, declared that she was uneducated and unaware of the provisions of the Child Marriage Act. The district administration has prevented three child marriages in the last month of December, first in Barah Khurd village on December 1, second in Didwara village on December 7 and the third in Mandi Kalan village on 25 December, he added.
