One person died and two others were injured after being hit by an REM train on Montreal’s south shore.
Longueuil police said they received a call around 3:10 a.m. Saturday, at a time when no scheduled trains were running.
Provincial police confirmed that three young people were hit by an REM train near Du Quartier station. One person died at the scene and the other two are still being treated for serious, possibly life-threatening injuries.
REM’s communications department told Radio-Canada that the incident occurred after “an intrusion on the tracks.”
On Saturday morning, an emergency response caused the suspension of service between the Brossard and Panama stations in both directions, according to the REM website. A shuttle service was launched.
“A group of people walking tried to cross Highway 10 and the REM tracks to get to the other side. Despite the arrival of a train, they continued walking,” said Sûreté du Québec spokesperson sergeant. Ève Brochu-Joubert told CBC.
Investigators from the Sûreté du Québec are on scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding this fatal incident.
